Mitchell First United Methodist Church has been actively engaged in supporting the people of Haiti since the 1980's. At that time a need was
discussed for children to receive a meal at the Methodist schools. Members of our church contacted the General Board of Global Ministries and "Haiti Hot Lunch" was born - and is still serving meals to hundreds of school children across the country.
For over twenty years Mitchell First UMC has regularly sent mission teams to Haiti. Most teams have been involved in some type of construction project, but the main purpose of sending teams is to build relationships with the people and develop an understanding of their needs, so as to most effectively be/bring the good news of the gospel while simultaneously being ministered to by the most poverty-stricken people of the western hemisphere.
We believe strongly in not only answering Jesus' call in Matthew 25 to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and heal the sick. We also believe strongly in empowering the people of Haiti and helping them to develop a sense of self worth and integrity. Often we have more to learn that we bring to share. We bring material resources for schools, food, clean water, and sustainable agricultural practices. The Haitian people impart to us their passionate spirituality and insights into the Three-One God revealed to us in Jesus Christ.
Plans are in the infancy stage of "adopting" a village in Haiti. Along with other churches in the Dakotas we are working toward making a difference in one small corner of our world. Teams would assist in building a school, a church, a clinic, and helping build hope for one community.
Mitchell First UMC also sponsors a student, William, who is being educated and training to be a doctor to serve his country. In addition, we are
sponsoring Gertrude, who is in secondary school and has plans to be a teacher.
Come! and be a part of an exciting mission outreach to and with the people of Haiti through Mitchell First United Methodist Church!
